Fifth Huntsville Gamma-Ray Burst Symposium
Social Activities

Welcome Reception

The Symposium Organizing Committee invites attendees to the Huntsville Museum of Art for a Welcome Reception on Monday evening, 18 October, from 7 to 9 PM. Complimentary beverages and hors d'oeuvres will be served. This reception will offer a wonderful opportunity for everyone to greet old friends, and meet new ones, while exploring the variety of exhibits offered throughout the Museum. During this time the Museum will be closed to the public. Attendees who have preregistered can retrieve their Symposium packets, and those who have not yet registered are encouraged to do so here.

The Museum is housed in a beautiful new building in Big Spring International Park, a short walk from the Hilton. Seven spacious galleries feature a lively mix throughout the year of major touring exhibitions, works by nationally and regionally acclaimed artists, and shows that are drawn from the Museum's own 2,300-piece permanent collection.

Directions:
The Museum is located at 300 Church Street, and is an easy walk of a few minutes from the Hilton. Turn right out of the Hilton parking lot, cross Williams Street at the next traffic light, turning left onto Church Street. The Museum is the big building on the left in Big Spring Park.

Symposium Banquet

The Symposium Banquet will held on the evening of Thursday, 21 October. Please refer back to this page for details of the Banquet dinner.

Jack Daniel's Distillery Tour

Image of Jack Daniel

The home of the world-famous Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey is a short 45 minute scenic ride from Huntsville to Lynchburg, Tennessee, population 361 (see map).

At the conclusion of the Symposium, we have planned an excursion to visit the distillery on Saturday, 23 October. The trip will include a free tour of the Jack Daniel's Distillery, and we will also spend the afternoon in Lynchburg for souvenir shopping and lunch/dinner in the town square.

Jack Daniel himself, shown in the image on the right, used to travel the dirt road via mule wagon to Huntsville to sell his goods. More information on the distillery is available for your perusal.

The graduate students at BATSE from The University of Alabama in Huntsville would like to invite all graduate students attending the 5th Huntsville Gamma-Ray Burst Symposium to the graduate student social to be held Tuesday evening, 19 October. The event will provide an excellent opportunity to make new friends in the field. The evening will begin with a 6pm dinner at Bubba's Restaurant.
