The Moon preserves thousands of impact craters that record the shared impact his
tory of the Earth and Moon. One chapter in this history, the controversial
"lunar cataclysm" or "late heavy bombardment", was a short period of intense bom
bardment in the Earth-Moon system 4 billion years ago, when early and intense im
pacts must have affected Earth's atmosphere, environment, and early life. I will
discuss this important epoch in lunar history, our framework so far based on sa
mples, remote sensing, and modeling, and further critical tests of this hypothes
is that may be conducted in a new age of lunar exploration.
